The WHS swim team had an away swim meet at Middletown High on Tuesday, January 31st against Brunswick. They left Middletown with a win for the boys and girls in their last dual-meet of the season improving their records to 7-2 and 5-5 respectively.

As the swim team heads into the postseason they expressed their feelings about how their last regular season meet went, and what they need to do to get ready for the championship meets.

Sophomore Kameron Conley said, “It was our last regular season meet which is sad, but I’m also excited for the championship meets.” The championship meets will go on over the next three weekends. The WHS Swim Team will look to advance past counties, to regionals, and then to states.

When asked what needs to be done to prepare for the championship season Conley continues, “To prepare myself for the championship season I need to taper, and carb load which [means] eating lots of carbs to prepare your body for the race.”

The girls swim team has an interesting way of preparing for counties. Senior Claire Owen explained, “Friday night before counties we all like meditate in the pool, and turn off all the lights.” Senior Gracie Armogida agreed, and added, “It is really cool and relaxing when all the lights go off.” Armogida also echoed Conley’s statement about tapering in preparation for post season.

Senior Jack Chavez shared his personal achievements this season. Chavez said, “I have beaten my personal best in all the races I swam, and the team has ended the regular season 7-2. Senior year has so far been my best year for swimming, and I am looking forward to finishing the season strong.” Chavez will help the Lions go farther in the postseason.

The girls and boys swim team will participate in the CMC Championships which will take place on February 11th.
